  Selby House in the 70's

A brief history of Selby Community House...

In the early 1970's a dedicated band of Selby residents had a vision for empowering their local community. With help from the Whitlam Government's Australian Assistance Plan (AAP), the first of the Sherbrooke Community Houses was born at Minak Reserve, Selby, in a near derelict building almost reclaimed by the bushland surrounding it.

The premise was to establish a facility based on a non hierarchical structure that drew its power and inspiration from the grass roots involvement of the residents.

Over the years it has been hugely successful and as the physical house has been improved and developed, the roots that have extended out into the community have also grown stronger and stronger.

To the right is shown a photo of the house as it was in the late 1970s. It has grown quite a deal since then. Also shown is
Cr. Louis Delacretaz, outgoing President of the old Shire of Sherbrooke, opening the new extension in December 1994. This was the final official function of the Shire of Sherbrooke before it was amalgamated into the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

Selby Community House is an Incorporated Body that has a set of Core Values as its primary framework.
