A BIT OF HISTORY....

Back in the early 70s,Francois Rogeon
le grande' papa, Francois Rogeon (right) together with others involved
at Selby House got
together and held the very first
"Selby Folk Club ".

Since then, Selby Folk Club has become a legendary institution to followers of folk, roots and blues music traditions. Over the years many top flight national and international artists have come to play at the Folk Club. Many fine performers have begun their musical adventures at the club. It is a well known proving ground for new and untried talent.

The highly acclaimed young Australian Guitarist, Singer and Songwriter Matt Walker had his earliest performance at the club. Matt, then aged about thirteen, hung around for several years soaking up the music and looking for any chance to jam with the older players. Since then his career has taken him touring around the United States with the high point being the warm up act for Bob Dylan's last Australian tour.

By the late 80's the club was going great guns and the first of the Selby Folk Festivals was organised. These festivals were a wonderful community event with most of Selby's residents attending. The first Festival on December 3rd 1987 was broadcast on ABC National radio by Paul Petran on the popular "Music Deli" program. It was a huge night with hundreds of people packed into the two sound stages. One inside the house and the main stage area at the rear. The night was hot and sticky with the crowd roaring for more as a cavalcade of amazing talent from all over the planet performed. Delicious ethnic style food was provided by the fund raising committees of the CFA, Selby Primary School, Scouts etc. etc. The Venturers provided people to man the carpark on the oval. It was a great bringing together of many local community groups with a common purpose. It summed up in a single incandescent evening most of what Selby Community House is all about.
